Winter SUP in Lapland: Paddleboarding Through a Frozen World

Winter SUP in Lapland: Paddleboarding Through a Frozen World

Outdoor Artisans Team

Stand-up paddleboarding in the Arctic winter sounds absurd. But gliding down a steaming river through snow-covered forest might be the most surreal experience in Lapland.

When we tell people we offer stand-up paddleboarding in winter, the first response is usually a laugh. Followed by: "Wait, seriously?"

Seriously. Winter SUP on the Pyhäjoki river is one of the most unusual and visually stunning experiences we run. Here's what makes it extraordinary.

How It's Possible

The Pyhäjoki river near Pyhätunturi has sections that remain open water throughout winter. Spring-fed stretches and moderate currents prevent the river from freezing completely, even when air temperatures drop to -20°C or below.

The result is something that looks impossible: open, flowing water surrounded by metres of snow, with ice formations along the banks and steam rising from the surface into the cold air. It's like paddling through a dream.

The Gear

You wear a full dry suit over warm base layers. The suit keeps you completely dry even if you fall in (which happens less often than you'd think on the calm river). Neoprene gloves protect your hands. We provide everything:

  • Inflatable SUP board (extra stable, designed for beginners)
  • Dry suit and neoprene accessories
  • Paddle
  • Safety equipment and guide

What You See

This is where winter SUP transcends sport and becomes something closer to meditation.

The river flows quietly through old-growth boreal forest. Snow sits heavy on the spruce branches, bending them into arches over the water. Ice crystals form along the banks in elaborate, fractal patterns. Steam curls off the water surface and catches the low Arctic light.

The only sounds are your paddle entering the water, the soft flow of the river, and occasionally a Siberian jay calling from the treeline. The contrast between the warm water beneath your board and the frozen world surrounding you creates a sense of being in two seasons simultaneously.

On clear days, the light is extraordinary. The low winter sun filters through the forest, catching the steam and ice crystals and turning the river corridor into something that looks like a film set.

Who It's For

Winter SUP requires moderate fitness and balance. Previous SUP experience helps but isn't essential. The river is calm and the boards are wide and stable. Our guide provides instruction on the bank before you launch and stays with the group throughout.

That said, this is a genuine Arctic activity. You'll be on water in sub-zero temperatures, and the experience demands comfort with cold conditions and a willingness to try something unusual. It's rated moderate difficulty for good reason.

Duration and Season

Sessions run 3 to 4 hours including gear fitting, instruction, paddling, and a warm drinks break. The season depends on river conditions but typically runs from November through April.

Combine with Other Experiences

Winter SUP pairs well with warming indoor activities:

  • Follow it with a traditional sauna session to warm up and decompress
  • Combine with an afternoon of bushcraft skills for a full wilderness day
  • Evening visitors can add aurora floating for a water-themed Arctic day

Why We Run This Experience

At Outdoor Artisans, we're always looking for ways to experience the Arctic landscape that go beyond the expected. Winter SUP emerged because the Pyhäjoki river was right there, open and beautiful, while everyone else was looking at the frozen lakes.

It's the kind of experience that doesn't exist in many places. Open water flowing through a frozen forest, accessible by paddleboard, guided by people who know every bend in the river. If you're looking for something genuinely different during your Lapland trip, this might be it.
