Planning Your First Trip to Lapland: Everything You Need to Know

Outdoor Artisans Team

Flights, accommodation, best time to visit, how many days to stay, and what to actually do. A practical first-timer's guide to Finnish Lapland from people who live here year-round.

Planning a Lapland trip from scratch can feel overwhelming. When should you go? Where exactly should you stay? How cold is too cold? Is three days enough? What if there are no northern lights?

We've helped hundreds of visitors plan their trips to Pyhätunturi. Here's the practical guide we wish everyone read before booking.

When to Visit

Lapland has two peak seasons, and they couldn't be more different:

Winter Season (November to March)

This is when most visitors come. Snow, darkness, northern lights, and the full range of Arctic winter activities. Within the winter season, each month has its own character:

  • November: First snow, first darkness, aurora season begins. Temperatures around -5°C to -15°C. Quiet, few tourists.
  • December: Polar night (kaamos). The sun doesn't rise above the horizon. Magical blue twilight for a few hours midday. Busiest tourist month due to Christmas.
  • January: Coldest month (-15°C to -35°C). Darkest month. Fewest tourists outside holiday weeks. Excellent for northern lights and genuine Arctic conditions.
  • February: The light returns. Days lengthen rapidly. Excellent snow conditions, warmer temperatures, and strong aurora activity. Our favourite month.
  • March: Long sunny days, still plenty of snow. Spring skiing conditions. Good for families and those who want light + winter.

Summer Season (June to August)

Midnight sun, endless daylight, hiking, fishing, and a completely different landscape. The snow is gone, the forests are green, and the lakes are open. Summer Lapland is quieter and more affordable than winter.

How to Get Here

The nearest airports to Pyhätunturi are:

  • Rovaniemi (RVN): 1.5 hours south by car. Direct flights from Helsinki daily, seasonal routes from European cities.
  • Ivalo (IVL): 1 hour north by car. Fewer flights but a shorter drive.

From either airport, you can rent a car or arrange a transfer. We can help with transfer recommendations when you contact us.

How Many Days

Our recommendation:

  • 3 days: Minimum for a meaningful experience. Enough for 2 to 3 activities plus aurora hunting.
  • 4 to 5 days: The sweet spot. Time for a full range of activities without rushing. Multiple chances for northern lights.
  • 7+ days: Deep immersion. Mix activities with rest days, explore the national park hiking trails, settle into the rhythm of Arctic life.

What to Do

Pyhätunturi is an activity destination. Here's a balanced itinerary for a 4-day winter visit:

Accommodation

Pyhätunturi has a range of options:

  • Fell-side cabins: Self-catering, typically with sauna. Best for independence and space.
  • Hotel Pyhätunturi: The main hotel in the village. Convenient, with restaurant and spa.
  • Wilderness lodges: More remote, more atmospheric. Book early as they fill up fast.

Budget

Lapland is not a budget destination, but it's not outrageously expensive either. As a rough guide:

  • Flights: Helsinki to Rovaniemi from 80 to 200 EUR return
  • Accommodation: 80 to 250 EUR per night depending on type
  • Activities: 100 to 300 EUR per person per activity
  • Food: Restaurant meals 15 to 40 EUR. Cabin self-catering reduces costs significantly

Common First-Timer Mistakes

  • Booking only 2 days. You'll feel rushed and may miss the northern lights entirely. Three days minimum.
  • Not dressing properly. Read our packing guide. Cotton kills.
  • Expecting guaranteed auroras. Northern lights are a natural phenomenon. We can put you in the best place at the best time, but nature has the final word. Multiple nights in Lapland dramatically increase your chances.
  • Over-scheduling. Leave space for spontaneity. Some of the best Lapland moments happen when you have no plans: a surprise aurora on a walk, an empty trail through fresh snow, an hour by the fireplace watching the darkness.
