November in Finnish Lapland is the calm before the winter season: first snow, long aurora nights and almost no crowds. Here is what to expect at Pyhätunturi and what you can book.
Lapland in November: The Quiet Start of the Arctic Winter
November is the month most travellers skip, and that is exactly why it works. The autumn colours are over, the first lasting snow arrives, the lakes begin to freeze and the trails around Pyhätunturi are almost empty. If you want the Arctic without the crowds, Lapland in November is a very good choice.
Weather and daylight in November
Expect temperatures that usually sit somewhere between -5 and -15 °C, with snow cover building through the month. Conditions change quickly, so pack for real winter (see our winter packing guide). Daylight is short and gets shorter every week: roughly six hours at the start of the month, dropping below four by the end. The upside is long, dark evenings, which is exactly what the northern lights need.
Northern lights in November
Pyhätunturi lies at 67°N, under the auroral oval, and November nights are long enough to give you several chances per evening. With aurora floating you float on your back in a dry suit and watch the sky directly above you. Cloud cover is the main variable, so it helps to stay a few nights. Read our northern lights guide for the best conditions.
What you can do in November
- Ice floating: starts once the lake ice is safe, often towards the end of the month. Guides decide on the day.
- Winter SUP: paddling on open, still water with snow on the shore.
- Arctic winter fishing and bushcraft skills: fire, shelter and cooking by the lake.
- Finnish sauna ritual: the best way to spend a dark November evening. Read about Finnish sauna culture.
Our programme depends on ice and snow, so check live availability on the activity pages or contact us before you travel.
Why November is worth it
You get the trails, the lakes and the sauna almost to yourself, and you are in the national park just before the busy Christmas season. It is a good moment for couples, friends and small groups who care more about atmosphere than about crowds.
