Lapland in April: Winter Snow with Spring Light
Lapland in April is one of the most underrated times to visit. The snow is still deep, the days are long and bright, and the cold of mid-winter is behind you. Pyhätunturi in the Pyhä-Luosto National Park feels calm, spacious and very photogenic.
Weather and daylight in April
Temperatures are usually between -5 and +5 °C, with sunny days and colder nights. Daylight grows fast: by mid-April you get around 14 hours, so there is time for a full day outdoors and an evening sauna. Snow conditions remain good in the fells, but trails and lake ice change from week to week as spring arrives.
Northern lights in April
Aurora season is winding down. Early April can still bring good displays on clear nights, but the nights are shorter and lighter than in winter. If the lights are your main goal, choose the first week or go earlier in the season (see Lapland in March).
What you can do in April
- Ice floating: possible as long as the lake ice is thick enough, usually into early April. Guides decide on the day.
- Arctic winter fishing: spring is a pleasant time for ice fishing, with sun on the lake.
- Bushcraft skills: fire making, shelter and campfire cooking in the snow.
- Snowshoe hikes and skiing: long, bright days on the fells.
